Day 1, 8/1/10 Arrival

My journey begins…. I arrive into Quito, Ecuador around 10pm and wander the airport to find Diego. Both of us think we will recognize one-another, but we don’t, and the waiting continues until he makes a sign for me. He helps me into the rain with my luggage and I am surprised by the cold of the night. He then introduces me to his wife, Sandy, who is asleep in the passenger seat of their Chevy Tracker. She doesn’t look enthused to have me here, but was pleasant enough and was quite willing to tolerate me. Diego is extremely friendly with impeccable English, so that will make the trip much easier.

We drive the 2 hour drive through the Andes from Quito to Ambato under a shroud of rain and darkness. There are wild dogs on the street everywhere I look. We make it into Ambato around 1am and Diego informs me that I will be staying in his father’s home. He sends me to a room and shows me where the bathroom is and I’m alone for the night. There are dogs barking around me and I look at my bed with tired eyes. It will be interesting to see how daylight will put a spin on the city in the morning.

  1. I am loving the blog so far. Makes the whole "living with an old man" comment in your e-mail make so much more sense now :D
